Milestones

  • Sep. 2006 – The FCC established the Pilot Program and requested applications to fund the construction of broadband infrastructure for the benefit of rural health care providers.
  • May 2007 – The Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI)—in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, the Michigan Health Information Technology Commission, the Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN) Resource Center, and Michigan State University—submitted the Michigan application.
  • Dec. 2007 – FCC awarded $20.9 million to MPHI (4th highest of 69 awards).
  • Sep. & Oct. 2009 – MPHI received a $0.5 million funding commitment from the FCC for the first of three projects, completion of a wireless network in the Thumb area.
  • June 2010 – The first of three projects was completed.
  • July 2011 – MPHI received an $8 million funding commitment for the second of three projects, construction of a high-speed, statewide network linking 72 health care sites.
  • Fall 2011/Winter 2012 – MPHI expects to receive $10.8 million in funding commitments for the third of three projects, construction of private fiber networks for four Michigan hospital systems involving 34 sites.
  • Dec. 2012 or later – Expected completion date for the third of three projects
  • Aug. 2013 – Expected completion date for the second of three projects
  • Sep. 2015 – MPHI expects to fulfill its Pilot Program invoicing facilitation responsibilities for the second and third projects.
  • 2032-2033 – Twenty-year IRU leases for the four hospital systems' private fiber networks will expire.
